Reflections on "Mr. Barton's Sermon" from Looking Backward
In this text Mr. Barton goes into a very deep description of how things are in the 19th century and reveals just how barbaric the time is. He saw it as a time where you could not just have christian values because it was a time where one had to act in a barbaric way simply to survive! He discusses how there would have to be some drastic catastrophe in order to change the way people lived their lives. His idea for the future was a beautiful one, though. He imagined a time where, instead of the kind, generous, and just people feeling uncomfortable because of their qualities, that the cold-hearted, greedy, and self-seeking people would find themselves to not have a place in the world. This idea he has of a future where right and truth is prevailed is a very utopian idea and reminds me much of the Prometheus and Pandora story's beginning.
